THE CANTON OF ZŰRICH
After having visited the City of Zürich you’re ready to check out the rest of the canton. A round-trip on the Lake of Zürich on one of the historical paddle-wheel steamer ships is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable ways to be introduced to the region. There are a number of options from short trips to the 4-hour round trip to Rapperswil, a city we will feature in a future “Spotlight”. Some travelers opt to take the train back from certain destinations. In addition to the regularly scheduled tours, specialty culinary cruises are offered. The north shore of the lake, the “gold coast”, is dotted with beautiful houses & villas, and of course neat villages all the way to the tip of the lake.
Switzerland is a mecca for tourists, but also the home of many large, well-known, multi-national corporations. The Zürich Insurance Group, for example, headquartered in Switzerland & founded in 1872, is one of the largest insurance companies in the world. The City of Winterthur, the 6th largest city in Switzerland, located in the Canton of Zürich, is the home of one of the world’s leading pump manufacturers -Sulzer. Winterthur has traditionally been known as an industrial hub and is recognized for its high-tech manufacturing sector. For many visitors, including many Swiss, the city is “off the beaten path” and rarely visited as a tourist destination.
Winterthur is a city of museums catering to large & diversified audiences. Many are located along the spacious pedestrian zone. One of the more unique museums, Technorama, is one of the biggest science centers in the world. Over 500 experiment stations on three floors offer hands-on experiences for young & old in the fields of biology, chemistry and Physics. For those interested in photography as an art-form, Winterthur’s Center for Photography is a must-see. The museum explores the diversity of photographic media with exhibitions of contemporary and classic photography. Not far from Winterthur, overlooking the Töss River, you can visit & explore the dungeons and medieval kitchen of the Kyburg Castle.
There are many other neat places to visit in the Canton of Zürich. For chocolate lovers a visit to the Lindt factory in Kilchberg is a treat. For those of you who were brought up to the stories of Heidi, a visit to the Johanna Spyri Museum in Hirzel is a must. If you have ever wanted to visit a coal mine, you can do so in Käpfnach near Horgen.
