VAL DE BAGNES
The Canton of Valais is the home to the iconic Cervin- most know it as the Matterhorn. What many don’t realize is that the Valais hosts some of the finest ski slopes in the world. For skiers the town of Verbier, located in the Val de Bagnes, is one of the gateways to the “4 Vallées”. The region is comprised of nine interlinked ski stations covering over 250 miles of pisted slopes. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced downhill or cross-country skier, you’ll find the perfect slope for your skill level. If you are not a skier you can get a thrill on the 10 kilometer toboggan run, or if you prefer go on a snowshoe walk along the many trails.
The Val de Bagnes is ideal for summer vacations too, especially so if you are a hiker. After all, hiking is Switzerland’s national sport. The walking trails consist of approximately 250 miles of marked paths ranging from the easier “yellow” trails to the very demanding Alpine “white-blue-white” trails for hikers in peak physical condition. Needless to say there are plenty of opportunities for mountain bikers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful varied landscape of the region. One of the hikes you might consider taking is a visit to Mauvoisin, the site of one of Switzerland’s largest reservoirs and arched dams. The dam with a height of 250 meters is only exceeded in height by the Grande Dixence Dam. The Hoover Dam height, by the way, is 221 meters.
As a kid I fell in love with cows and I still am. There is something majestic about them. The hérens cows you’ll find in the Val de Bagnes are truly majestic, and their cheese superb. Did you know that Swiss cows tend to be extremely territorial and won’t hesitate to lock horns, in a queenly manner of course, with other cows to establish a position among her peers. Every year in the Valais, tournaments are held in villages across the canton to witness combats among cows of the valley where the winner will be crowned “Queen of the Queens”. These are not “bull-fights”, they are more push & shoving matches where the looser runs away if outmatched. Check out the video. Although it’s in French, you’ll still enjoy it.
