                                                     TICINO

Yes! There are indeed palm trees in Switzerland. You can see them in a Mediterranean-style setting along the beautiful lakes in the canton of Ticino – the Italian speaking region of Switzerland. For magnificent panoramic views of the Alps & the Ticinese region and a truly unique experience, you’ll want to take the funicular to Monte San Salvatore. You can also enjoy a breathtaking view over the Bernese & Valais Alps by taking the cable car from Lugano to Monte Brè. One of the fun things to do if you want to see most of Switzerland in one day is to visit Swissminiatur in Melide on the shore of Lake Lugano. This fantastic park features over 120 models (1:25 scale) of the most important buildings & monuments of Switzerland and a 2.2 mile long model railway.

As a foodie I’m automatically attracted to food festivals. Wherever you go in Switzerland, for that matter anywhere in the world, you’ll find local festivals & customs with long histories and traditions. In the Ticino two come to mind. In Bellinzona, Lugano & Locarno on Mardi Gras you can celebrate the “Risottata” and enjoy a community meal of risotto with little luganighe sausages. Then in October you definitely need to visit Ascona for their “Castagnatas” at the Chestnut Autumn Festival to taste the many chestnut-based delicacies. Although not a food festival, if you are a lover of Jazz, the premier event for you is the Estival Jazz which takes place in Lugano’s Piazza della Riforma and the town of Mendrisio. To experience a touch of the Italian Dolce Vita lifestyle mixed with Swiss efficiency, a visit to the Ticino is a must.
