CRANS – MONTANA
When asked to name famous Swiss winter or summer resorts most people easily identify St. Moritz, Davos, Gstaad, and sometimes Verbier. Surprisingly they often omit Crans-Montana which is located in the canton of Valais on the north side of the Rhône Valley. Easily accessible, it offers everything one could possibly expect to find in a modern first-class Swiss resort. You’re in Switzerland so panoramic views of the alps is a given. Although recognized for years as a health resort for patients suffering from tuberculosis, Montana has been a well-known alpine ski resort going back to the early 1900s, as well as a summer golf resort hosting the first Swiss Open in 1939.
“Crans-Montana” are actually two neighboring resorts linked together since the 1960s. Crans is more upscale featuring well known fashion shops & boutiques such as Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, & Prada and of course a super range of fine restaurants & hotels. Montana, the older of the two resorts, is a bit more down to earth albeit according to the younger set offering a livelier après-ski. Although a classic winter resort with its traditional offerings of skiing (downhill, cross-country, & freestyle), skating, sledding, & snowboarding, Crans-Montana features an amazing snowpark judged by many as one of the finest in the Alps. Non-skiers also have ample opportunities to fill their day. In addition to shopping, getting pampered in spas, and dining, there are several fine art galleries to visit including an interesting Alpine museum.
For many, Crans-Montana is the perfect Swiss summer resort. A fun way to reach it is by train to Sierre where you can catch the funicular to the resort. Internationally, Crans-Montana is known for hosting the European Masters Golf Tournament. According to Greg Norman, Crans’s scenic course which was redesigned by Steve Ballesteros in 1999, “”is by far the most spectacular tournament site in the world.” Crans-Montana with its family friendly atmosphere and many amenities has earned the “Family Destination Label”. Children have the opportunity to fully enjoy themselves while the adults can recharge their batteries knowing that their kids are safe. Tennis, swimming in one of the five lakes or swimming pools, hiking & biking are just some of the many activities offered at the resort.
