                                                    ASCONA

Picture yourself sitting at a seaside café, sipping a glass of local wine, and watching people strolling along a lakeside promenade lined with palm trees. Although the menu you’re looking at is in Italian, you are not on the Mediterranean. Yes, you are in Switzerland in the Canton of Ticino in the resort town of Ascona. Located on the Lago Maggiore, this picturesque village is a “go to” destination for foreign tourists as well as Swiss looking for a beautiful spot to spend a few relaxing days in a warm climate.

Ascona is well-known for its picturesque promenade lined by colorful buildings, cafés, and restaurants. It is easily recognized by its major landmark, the tall belltower of the Church of Saint Peter & Paul located in the center of the old town. The Church adorned with well-preserved frescoes dates back to the 16th century & was renovated in the 18th century. You’ll definitely want to stroll along the “Borgo’s” narrow, cobbled streets and alleys. You’ll find art galleries, boutiques, bars, restaurants, and of course a souvenir shop or two. If you are a foodie or simply enjoy fine dining, check out the new gourmet restaurant guide which highlights Ticinese Restaurants by clicking on the highlighted link. (You will want to select Ascona-Locarno Region).

Azcona remained a quiet fishing village & well-kept secret for many years. In the early 20th century a group of naturists established a colony on Monte Verità which over time attracted artists, philosophers, and writers. According to some historians, it sparked the development of tourism. To reach Monte Verità, you can take the long staircase from the old town (Borgo) to the top. It is a bit challenging for some, hence recommend taking a bus for an eight-minute ride to reach it. You will be rewarded with a stunning view of the lake. In addition to a museum, park, and restaurant, you can visit the most northerly tea plantation in Europe and attend a tea ceremony.

According to people who have visited Ascona, you need to take a short boat trip to Brissago’s Isola Grande Island. Its main attraction is the botanical garden which houses over 1500 exotic plant species. The other “must see” activity is “JazzAzcona” which this year will feature over 500 free concerts & shows. Ascona’s Sister City is New Orleans, hence, as you might expect, you will be enjoying some fantastic music and have the opportunity to taste many Creole specialties. The festival will take place from 22 June – 1 July 2023.
