ADELBODEN
A visit to Spiez on your way to Adelboden is a must. One of the most delightful ways to reach the town is to take a paddlewheel steamship from Thun. In Spiez plan to visit the medieval castle & its1000 year-old church, have a leisurely lunch accompanied by a glass of Spiezer wine, then end your visit with a casual stroll along the lake promenade. On your way to Spiez you undoubtedly viewed the pyramid-like mountain overlooking the Lake of Thun. The 7,700 ft high Mount Niesen is a short ride from the town. The top, which offers a magnificent view over the alps, can be reached via a funicular. Do keep in mind that the weatherman doesn’t always cooperate and the view is frequently obscured by clouds.
Halfway to Adelboden you’ll reach the village of Frutigen which is located at the intersection of the Kandertal & Engstligental valleys. Railway enthusiasts will want to spend some time to check out the railroad trail detailing the history of the Lötschberg base tunnel whose northern portal ends here. There is an interesting Tropical Hothouse located in the village which uses the surplus heat of the mountain massif to heat the tropical plants & the cultivation of sturgeon for their caviar.
Adelboden in Summer is “classic” Switzerland. The countryside is dotted with alpine huts & farmhouse. In the higher alpine meadows you’ll see cows munching away on the rich, green grass. Hikers can enjoy the many well-groomed hiking trails some of which are wheelchair accessible. One of the popular outings is to take the cable car from the village center to the Tschentenalp & hike back down to the village. Another fun thing to do is to rent one of the motor-less scooters (trottis) for rides down the downhill slopes. The network of seven routes covers over 25 miles. Adelboden, as is the case in all Swiss resorts, offers a wide range of accommodations, and of course great restaurants.
Adelboden is a great place for summer holidays and it also makes an ideal winter destination. The Adelboden-Lenk ski area is well known. In January one of the most popular FIS Ski World Cup races takes place on the steep slopes of Chuenisbärgli. It’s considered one of the world’s toughest giant slalom races. About 40,000 ski fans visit the village for the event.
Tales abound in Switzerland & most of you know the story of Heidi. In Adelboden you’ll be introduced to the legend of Vogellisi & her love of birds. Should you find yourself in a pub in the wee hours, ask a native to tell you about Lisi. Before long you’ll be serenaded with my favorite Swiss folk-song “S’berneroberland isch schön”.
